The Red Clay Strays's voice was excellent despite his recent strained vocal cords, which led to the cancellation of a show a few days ago. A significant part of the performance consisted of extended instrumental sections or vocals by a visiting banjo player. I would have preferred more of the classic DMB music and vocals, although both were enjoyable. The sound at the Gorge in Washington was the best I have ever heard - everything clear and crisp with no distortion or echoes - fantastic! The band was energetic, the stage flashy, and it was helpful for those of us at the back to enjoy the show. This is a significant improvement over a canceled show, though!
Rain dampened the enthusiasm for both opening bands, with many people seeking shelter in covered beer gardens or under tarps. All risks are inherent in an outdoor venue in the Northwest. The rain cleared up, giving way to clear, starry skies just in time for the headliner.
